TWO students from Karratha are progressing well with their tertiary studies in Perth, aided by scholarships awarded by Oswal Group Global.
Hayley Middleton, a former St Luke's College student, and Tessa Groen, who graduated from Karratha Senior High School in 2007, were the first students to benefit from a scholarship program created by the group which operates the Burrup Fertilisers plant in Karratha.
Hayley Middleton deferred her first year of study to work with Qantaslink in Karratha to save money to help pay for accommodation in Perth.
Hayley is now in her second year of journalism studies at Curtin University and hopes to become a fashion writer.
She plans to travel to Europe when she graduates, looking for opportunities to work with one of the major English fashion magazines.
Hayley said she still had to work part-time to make ends meet but the scholarship, which covers her tuition costs, took a great weight off her mind.
Tessa Groen is in the third year of her psychology degree at the University of Western Australia.
She plans to use the fourth year of her scholarship studying for an honours degree. She aims to work in clinical psychology before seeking opportunities in her chosen field - sports psychology.
Like Hayley, Tessa said she also needed to work. The program is now in its third year and provides three students a year with a scholarship payable over four years. In 10 years, the program will have assisted 30 Karratha students at a cost of more than $500,000.
